Recreation
At Fonn Villas’s swim club, residents swim in the summer, watch their children compete in swim meets as part of the Fonn Villas Dolphins swim team, and gather for social events year round. Fonn Villas encourages families from other subdivisions to apply for swim-club or swim-team memberships. Bendwood Park, surrounded on three sides by the subdivision, provides residents fourteen acres that include a playground, tennis and basketball courts, paths, and wide-open green space. On the fourth side, the green space extends to school grounds that include a small SPARK nature park and several small playgrounds, two of which are covered. The public has access to those grounds—as well as Memorial Middle School’s quarter-mile track, football/soccer fields, and outdoor basketball and tennis courts—outside of school hours.
History: Raised on a Farm
Previously a farm on the far west side of Houston, Fonn Villas was developed in the early 1960s by Kickerillo Companies and then quickly populated. Fonn Villas was particularly favored by employees of Esso Exploration. Kickerillo built three- and four-bedroom homes with family rooms, fireplaces, and double garages on wooded lots configured on mostly cul-de-sac and dead-end streets. Today, the homes are owned by young professionals with children as well as by original owners.
In 1961, the city established Bendwood Park in the center of Fonn Villas. Ever since, residents of Fonn Villas have worked to beautify and improve the park.
In 1962, the Fonn Villas Civic Association (FVCA) was incorporated.
Also in 1962, the Fonn Villas Swim Club, across the street from Bendwood Park, opened and became the main attraction during the summer.
In 1972, the FVCA revised the bylaws and gained control of the money used to maintain the subdivision. The FVCA continues to promote the attractive appearance of Fonn Villas.
From 2008 to 2010, the city installed new street pavement, street lights, and water, storm-sewer, and sanitary-sewer lines in the subdivision. The FVCA paid $85,000 to upgrade the style of the lights.
In 2015, the swim club merged into the FVCA. All Fonn Villas lot owners are now members of the club, which also accepts membership from families in other subdivisions.
